  • Sustainability initiatives at the upcoming Qualifier in Switzerland

At the SSL Gold Cup 2026 Qualifiers, the fight for qualification goes hand in hand with protecting the waters that make the sport possible. In June, some of the world’s best sailing nations will arrive in Switzerland with one goal, to earn their place at the SSL Gold Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro. But at the SSL Gold Cup 2026 Qualifiers, the competition is about more than speed, tactics, and teamwork.

    It is also about responsibility.

Set on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, the African and European qualifiers are once again raising the standard for sustainable sport, with SSL targeting another Platinum certification from Sailors for the Sea, the highest global standard for environmentally responsible sailing events. From the first morning briefing to the final race, sustainability is built into every part of the regatta.

    No Plastic. No Excuses.

At the SSL venue, single-use plastic has no place. No PET bottles will be sold. Every sailor receives a reusable bottle. Water refill stations are available across the regatta village, making refill the easiest choice for everyone on site. It’s a simple idea, but when hundreds of athletes, coaches, officials, and guests come together, small choices create a real impact.

    Local Food, Lower Impact

Performance starts with energy, and at SSL, that energy comes with a lower footprint. Meals are prepared using locally sourced products from the Grandson region, supporting local partners while reducing transport emissions. Reusable plates, compostable packaging, and a vegetarian-first approach help turn every meal into part of the solution.

Protecting the Water We Race On

Sailors depend on nature. At SSL, protecting it is part of the race. Under World Sailing rules, throwing waste overboard is strictly prohibited. Every support boat is equipped with spill-response kits, ensuring immediate action if fuel or oil enters the water. Because on Lake Neuchâtel, performance means nothing without protection.

    Smarter Boats, Longer Life

One of the biggest sustainability wins is something spectators may never notice. The SSL fleet competing in 2026 is not newly built for one season. These are boats with history, carefully maintained, reused, and brought back to race again. By extending the life of the fleet instead of replacing it, SSL dramatically reduces material waste and carbon emissions. At the same time, the SSL marina runs on solar energy, proving that elite sport can also run on cleaner power.

    More Than a Regatta

Before racing even begins, sailors will step away from the dock and into nature. Together with Pro Natura, teams will take part in a biodiversity walk around Lake Neuchâtel, learning more about the ecosystem they are about to compete in. Each nation will also appoint its own Sustainability Ambassador, athletes who will carry the message beyond Switzerland and back to their home sailing communities.

Because the road to Rio is not only about who crosses the finish line first. It’s also about what kind of future the sport leaves behind.
